Reactions on Asian Idol Results

Hady Mirza's win came as a surprise, as at least three of the judges predicted that the winner would either be Marcelo, Mohede, or Victor.

There were claims that Hady may have gotten the crucial second vote outside of his home country, wherein it is claimed that votes for strong candidates were paired with weak ones like Hady and Sawant who were trailing in Asian Idol's online survey. This voting tactic was said to avoid viewers' home Idols be beaten by their closest rivals.

In Singapore, the victory stirred hopes of a revival of the country's golden age of music during the 1960's and 70's. Taufik Batisah, first season winner of Singapore Idol, said that the win is something their country should be proud of and hopefully this would "open the eyes and ears" of listeners. However, there were viewers in Singapore who still doubt Hady's singing ability, claiming that his performance in Asian Idol was not as strong as other competitors and it was a matter of "luck over talent". Singapore Idol judge Ken Lim reiterated that "looks and voice" had won the title for Hady.

Meanwhile, Hady shrugged off speculations that he won because he was a "non-threat", but considered himself an underdog and that he did "pretty well" in terms of sincerity and connecting with the audience.

Filipino TV and movie critic Nestor U. Torre mentioned that he was not surprised about Hady's win, even lauding him for his "impressively cool yet dynamic" performances. He also appreciated Victor and Phuong Vy's performances. While Torre was also equally impressed by Marcelo and Mohede's voices, he also said that their girth worked to their disadvantage. On Sawant, Torre noted that his "balladeer" projection was "less dynamic" with his country's large voting population failing him. Despite the surprises and disappointments in the competition, Torre regarded Asian Idol a success as it produced relatively new talents in the Asian and international music scene.

HTV9 airs Asian Idol to rally local support

HCM CITY—HCM Television’s HTV9 brings Asian Idol to the airwaves at 8pm last evening, enabling voters from across the country to help Viet Nam’s Phuong Vy in her rise to stardom.

Asian Idol began airing from Singapore on Monday, gathering amateur singers from six countries in the region, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Viet Nam, the Philippines and India, to go head to head in an effort to become the next regional pop star.

Vietnamese TV-viewers must vote for at least two candidates and send their choices to call centre 4365. I-pop, the network specialising in provision of mobile content, billing and marketing solutions to Asia and the world, is responsible for collecting and filtering the results from all six countries. Winners will be announced at an award ceremony held at 9pm on Sunday, broadcast live on HTV9.

Singer Siu Black is the only Vietnamese member on the contest’s jury board. — VNS

Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Vy is the winner of the first Vietnam Idol on October 3, 2007. She auditioned in Ho Chi Minh City and never voted for bottom 3 at all time, finally enter the final round and won over Ngoc Anh with total votes of 53,44%. She was granted $US10,000 and signed a contract with Music Faces Company.

After winning Vietnam Idol, Phuong Vy concentrated on her study at RMIT, majoring in Business Administration, while finishing her first album with Music Face recording company.

Phuong Vy claims that her talent, luck and support of fans are the most important thing to win the contest, now that she got the chance to perform in Asian Idol in Jakarta this December.

Asian Idol Participation

The first season was hosted by Amelia "Ata" Natasha and Daniel Mananta, both from Indonesian Idol, and Malaysian Idol's Soo Kui Jien.

Each participating country had its own system of determining its representative.

As a kickoff to Asian Idol, all six contestants were introduced through a special presentation called Road to Asian Idol on December 8, 2007. Meanwhile, fans of each contestant will be able to choose the song they want their Idol to perform before the Asian Idol performance show. The Idols performed two songs each—one in English and another in their native language.

In addition to the coverage of Asian Idol, RCTI ran a series of features called Asian Idol Extra between late November to mid-December 2007.

Every competing country sent a judge to serve as the contestants' critics, but comments from only three judges on each performer were shown due to time constraints.

Special guests in the Results Show included American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian, Indian Idol judge Alisha Chinai, and Vietnam Idol judge Siu Black. It also featured performances by Rivermaya, Peterpan, and Agnes Monica.

The production of Asian Idol was put up with the help of the production crew from Australian Idol.

Meet the Asian Idol Contestants

After Indonesia has chosen their idol who is Mike Mohede last November 24, the roster of Idol competitors for the upcoming Asian Idol is now complete. The remaining five are Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant, Malaysian Idol Jaclyn Victor, Philippine Idol Mau Marcelo, Vietnam Idol Phuong Vy and Singaporean Idol Hady Mirza.

On December 15, the Finals Performance Show will be aired (locally on ABC 5), the public will be given 24 hours to vote two Idols they want to be the first Asian Idol, and on December 16, the first Asian Idol will be proclaimed!

Asian Idol will be hosted by Indonesian Idol hosts Amelia Natasha and Daniel Mananta. Guy Sebastian, the first Australian Idol will be a guest in the said Finals.

The winner of first season of the reality television show Vietnam Idol is set to represent Vietnam at the Asian Idol competition, to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from December 6-16.

Phuong Vy, 20, awarded US$10,000 upon winning the Vietnam Idol in Ho Chi Minh City two months ago, will perform an English song and a song in Vietnamese by renowned composer Duc Tri.

The upcoming Asian Idol is a continent-wide version of the Pop Idol singing contest, featuring winners of idol competitions from six Asian countries including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam.

The winner will be awarded an international recording contract and a free trip around the world to watch international Idol shows.

As part of the preparation for their participation in Asian Idol, the contestants will undergo vocal coaching, choreography lessons, media visits and radio interviews.

They will begin competing on December 15, and one of them will be crowned Asian Idol on December 16.

Meanwhile, fans of each contestant will be able to choose the song they want their Idol to perform before the Asian Idol performance show.

The Idols will perform two songs each – one in English and another in their first language.

The HCMC Television (HTV) is planning to broadcast the program live on the channel HTV9 from December 9-16.

Vietnam Idol to sing at Asian Idol

VietNamNet Bridge – The first Vietnam Idol, Nguyen Phuong Vy, will attend the Asian Idol singing contest, a copy of American Idol, which will be kicked off in Indonesia next month.

Singers from Indonesia, India, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam will compete for the Asian Idol title, said Teges Prita Soraya, the spokeswoman of Asian Idol organising board.

Three Asian Idol shows will be broadcast in the five involved countries and the audience can vote for their favourite singers by SMS.

The winner will be announced on December 16.

Singer Phuong Vy was the winner of the first Vietnam Idol held from April to September 2007.

Auditions

Theater Round

The contestants who passed the auditions, arrived in Ho Chi Minh City for the theater round where they were given songs from the judges to perform. Based on those performances, 30 contestants were chosen by the judges to proceed to the Piano Show.

Piano Round

On the June 27, 2007, the Piano Show began, with the Top 30 Contestants singing in Ho Chi Minh City for the judges and the viewers. The contestants were allocated numbers so that viewers could vote for their favourite(s). The viewers were able to vote by phone or by SMS. Contestants were divided into three groups of ten with the top 3 contestants from each group advancing to the Gala Round. Eight from the three groups that did not proceed to the finals during the first three rounds, competed for the last position in the Top 10 during the Wildcards round.

Gala Round

The gala round involves the contestants singing each week, with the contestant with the least votes each week being eliminated, until one contestant is left and crowned Vietnam Idol 2007. Before it began Thùy Dương withdrew from the Top 10 due to health issues with Ngọc Minh replacing her as he had received the second highest number of votes in the Wildcards round.

Grand Finale

On the 26th of September, the final two contestants, Phuong Vy and Ngọc Ánh were given their last chance to sing for the votes of the Vietnamese public. The Grand Finale was held at Hoa Binh Theatre, Ho Chi Minh City on the 3rd of October. During the night, all Top 10 contestants returned to perform with other guest stars. With 53.44% of the votes, Phuong Vy was announced the winner of Vietnam Idol 2007 ahead of Ngọc Ánh. As winner of Vietnam Idol she represented Vietnam in the Asian Idol competition.

Phuong Vy tops Vietnam Idol 2007

VietNamNet Bridge – Accounting for over 53% of the total 720,000 voting messages, contestant Phuong Vy from HCM City passed Ngoc Anh from Ha Tay province to become the first music idol of Vietnam.

The award ceremony took place last night, October 3, at the Hoa Binh Theatre in HCM City.

The Vietnam Idol 2007 winner, Phuong Vy said that besides the real ability, luck and the support of audiences are very important to become Vietnam Idol.

After the contest, all music activities of the Vietnam Idol 2007 will be managed by Music Faces Company. This is an opportunity for Phuong Vy to have access to the professional music environment and to prepare for the ASEAN Idol contest in December 2007.

Before the awards ceremony, the top last contestants of Vietnam Idol 2007, Phuong Vy and Ngoc Anh met with fans at the waiting room of the Hoa Binh Theatre.
